There are times when just being present isn’t enough; one must also possess the courage to stand up for those who are vulnerable and need help. This was exactly the case for four remarkable young boys whose night turned into a memorable experience.

Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rives-Perez were out skateboarding in an underground parking lot one evening. What they encountered was anything but ordinary. They saw a young girl, around 15 years of age, who was visibly intoxicated and being aggressively dragged through the area by a sharply dressed older man. This scene instantly raised alarms for the boys, as something didn’t quite seem right. One of them later described the girl’s state saying, “She was screaming and yelling. She just wanted to be out of there. She was all scuffed up and dirty.”

Concerned, the boys chose to approach the scene with hopes of helping the girl out of the questionable situation. The man, however, claimed he was her father. The girl didn’t utter a word to confirm or deny his claim, so the boys decided to step back.

Wright explained their reaction, “You don’t want to really think of the worst in somebody like that. You don’t want that situation to be real, so you just brush it off and hope for the best.”

Yet, the uneasy feeling lingered, prompting the boys to turn around and check on the girl once more.

This instinctive decision ended up being a lifesaver for the young girl.

Upon returning, they were appalled by what they found. The man was in the act of s**ually assaulting the young woman, who was too incapacitated to defend herself.

Nimenya recounted the shocking moment, “You walk in, and you see something like that, and you freeze. You don’t know what to do.”

Knowing they had to act immediately, the boys ran towards the perpetrator, who then tried to flee from the parking lot.

“He was trying to walk out and walk away from us,” Nimenya described. “He pushed me aggressively out of the way, kinda like just gives me the smile, like, ‘I can do this. You can’t do anything about it.’”

Not ready to let the attacker get away, the boys pursued him, leading to a confrontation where the man turned on them, using one of their skateboards to fight back. Fortunately, law enforcement officers arrived in time to handle the situation.

Relieved that the young woman was now safe, the boys had no idea how their courage would be acknowledged. The police, taking note of the bravery and unwavering determination displayed by these young men, decided to honor them. They were invited to the Chief’s Awards Gala to receive awards and be publicly recognized for their heroism.

These young men handled the situation with remarkable bravery, and they even risked their own safety for the well-being of a vulnerable person. They are real-life heroes and serve as a true inspiration for everyone. Their actions remind us all that sometimes, following your instincts can make all the difference.
