Mandisa, a Christian singer, died Thursday at her home in Nashville, years after writing a book about her mental health problems.
In her memoir Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy, which came out in 2022, Mandisa wrote about how she dealt with depression and anxiety after losing a close friend to cancer.
This was what she called her “deep dark” phase. In an interview with People in 2017, she pulled away and turned to food for comfort as her health got worse.
“When she died, it shook me to my core.” I fell into a deep hole of sadness. She said, “I went back to my old ways, which are food.”
The singer who used to be on American Idol died on Friday morning, but the cause of death has not been made public yet.
She was 47 years old.
