FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has announced a major arrest connected to violent rock attacks against federal immigration authorities — an incident that left one federal agent wounded and several government vehicles damaged.
According to officials, a Compton man accused of throwing concrete blocks at federal officers in Paramount has been taken into custody following weeks of investigation.
Suspect Arrested at U.S.–Mexico Border
Elpidio Reyna, 39, of Compton, was arrested Wednesday morning at the San Ysidro Port of Entry by FBI agents with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Fox 11 reported.
Reyna had been wanted in connection with an alleged assault on a federal officer on June 7 in Paramount. The FBI said the incident occurred as Border Patrol agents had established a staging area, where they were soon confronted by protesters.
Violent Clash Caught on Video
Federal officials stated that the situation escalated when agitators began throwing concrete blocks and glass bottles at officers, forcing them to respond with tear gas.
Video obtained by Fox shows Border Patrol agents retreating from the scene as their vehicle is struck repeatedly by rocks.
Bongino posted on his official FBI X account:
“You may remember Elpidio Reyna, a subject who allegedly threw rocks at federal officers during immigration operations in California June 7. We got him. He was arrested today at the U.S.-Mexico border.”
He added:
“More to come. Those who attack America’s police officers can run but they can’t hide.”
Identification Through Social Media Footage
Investigators used footage from social media and a FOX 11 news report to identify Reyna as the individual seen throwing objects at authorities. One federal officer was injured during the confrontation, and multiple government vehicles were damaged.
U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli also confirmed the arrest on X, writing:
“Elpidio Reyna surrendered today at the U.S.-Mexico border to face a felony charge of assault on a federal officer for throwing rocks at passing law enforcement vehicles in Paramount on June 7.”
He noted that Reyna was taken into custody by a Border Patrol officer inside one of the vehicles damaged in the attack — an officer who, according to Essayli, “could have been killed in last month’s dangerous and reckless attack.”
Strong Warning From Federal Authorities
Essayli concluded with a strong message:
“To anyone who thinks they can attack federal officers and hide behind a mask or helmet, Reyna’s arrest today proves we can find and charge anyone who violates federal law. Don’t touch our officers.”
