Bailey McBreen, a 25-year-old woman from Florida, never thought that her constant burping would lead to a diagnosis that would change her life. Up to ten times a day, she had been burping a lot for months, but she thought it was nothing serious at first.
However, when the burping turned into acid reflux and terrible stomach cramps, McBreen knew she had to see a doctor. She knew something was very wrong because she was a nurse, and she was right. She had stage 3 colon cancer, and a tumour was blocking her big intestine, as shown by a CT scan.
When McBreen and her family heard the news, they were shocked. She had no idea that her burping could be connected to a disease that was so bad. She now knows that the burping was probably a sign of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which was brought on by the tumour.
It was confirmed by McBreen’s doctor that the frequent burping was an early sign of the cancer. The tumour had been slowly blocking the intestines, which caused the GERD symptoms.
After being told she had cancer, McBreen had surgery right away to remove the tumour and is now going through chemotherapy. Because of what happened, she knows how important it is to trust her gut and listen to her body.
