Opinion: Should JD Vance really be in the Oval Office?

It’s undeniable that JD Vance has certainly made waves since stepping into the political spotlight. Initially, he rose to prominence as a senator for Ohio in 2023. His tenure there was short-lived, as he soon found himself alongside Donald Trump as Vice President in the White House.

While President Trump is known for his candidness, JD Vance seems to have amplified this trait. Whether or not you align with his views, there’s no denying that Vance has proven to be a unique figure in politics. His timing and approach, though, leave much to be desired.

Vance’s journey to the top includes notable milestones. After serving in the US military and graduating from Harvard, he wrote the celebrated book “Hillbilly Elegy” in 2016, which caught national attention and was adapted into a film directed by Ron Howard. Clearly, Vance had a vision for the country, and after a period of contemplation, decided to pursue those changes alongside Donald Trump. Rising to the position of US Senator in 2022, it wasn’t long before he was eyeing the White House.

Now, as Vice President, JD Vance operates from the heart of government, the Oval Office. Yet, he’s redefining the role to suit his style, raising the question: has he overstepped his mark, or is his bold persona just a natural fit for his position?

It’s evident that JD Vance is driven and knows his ambitions well. He hasn’t been one to shy away from dialogue or incite unnecessary conflict. However, his recent encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House has sparked conversations. Many view his abrupt stance towards Zelenskyy as unnecessary hostility.

To recall the incident, Vance, who wasn’t a Senator during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, urged President Zelenskyy to consider diplomatic solutions. He stated, “I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country. Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.”

From a personal viewpoint, JD Vance displayed a lack of respect. It’s clear he needs a deeper understanding of his role. Zelenskyy deserved acknowledgment for his previous efforts to express gratitude towards the United States. JD Vance needs to grasp that diplomacy requires more than just bold words – it requires thoughtful action and mutual respect.

The Vice President’s tendency to voice his thoughts candidly is a double-edged sword. In politics, words carry weight, and his current manner could incite unnecessary tension. It’s fortunate that his comments haven’t yet escalated tensions globally.

JD Vance’s approach in the Oval Office is certainly unconventional, but it warrants an inquiry into whether he’s truly suited to be the next leading figure next to the President. Trump has shown his reluctance to hold back on opinions, but it’s perhaps prudent for Vance to prioritize supporting his President instead of pushing his personal narrative.

Unscripted Moments in Congress

JD Vance was recently caught in a candid conversation with Speaker Mike Johnson before Donald Trump addressed Congress. During this chat, Vance commented on the difficulty of sustaining a speech for 90 minutes, which was inadvertently broadcast due to a live mic.

Johnson’s casual remark likened Trump’s speech to partisan rhetoric heard during Biden’s addresses, even gently moving the mic aside to continue privately. This incident raises questions about Vance’s awareness of his surroundings. In a room teeming with recording devices, perhaps Vance underestimated the microphone’s significance.

Body language expert Inbaal Honigman noted that Vance appeared unclear about the mic’s impact or puzzled about Johnson’s need for discretion in a room full of people. Such careless attitudes toward public conversations can lead to a perception of naivety or negligence on Vance’s part. If he’s to govern effectively, this awareness needs correction.
