With heavy hearts, we announce the sad news

It is with deep sorrow that we report the passing of Michel de Grece, King Charles III’s Greek uncle, who died at the age of 85. His death marks the end of a notable chapter in European royal history.

Michel de Grece: A Royal Legacy

Michel de Grece, also known as Prince Michael, passed away on July 28 in an Athens hospital, as confirmed by the Greek newspaper Ekathimerini. The details of his funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. Michel was the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece and maintained close connections with the British royal family.

Family Ties and Personal Choices

As a first cousin to the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Michel was also an uncle to King Charles III. His personal life garnered attention in 1965 when he renounced his royal rights to marry Marina Karella, an artist and commoner. This decision was a significant turning point in his life. Together, they had two daughters, Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga, and five grandchildren.

Commitment to Greece and Contributions

Despite political turmoil in Greece, including the failed 1967 counter-coup, Michel remained devoted to his homeland. His commitment was evident in his work as a historian and author, where he extensively covered Greek history, the Ottoman Empire, and European royalty. His influential books continue to inspire and educate readers.

A Personal Touch

Michel de Grece was also known for sharing insights into his life and thoughts through his Instagram page. In 2021, he expressed empathy for King Charles III’s challenges, stating, “I don’t know if he’s perfect or not…What I know is that he can hardly do better than what he does now…I think he does his best. [Queen Camilla], too. It’s very difficult.” Michel admitted that he did not envy Charles’s position, acknowledging the difficulties of the role with a sense of humor and dedication.

Family and Legacy

Michel reflected on contemporary family dynamics, noting the prevalent conflicts in many families today. He expressed deep affection for his own family, stating, “I created my own family, whom I adore – my wife, children, and grandchildren. That is the most important thing for me. My life has been one of experiences, of discoveries. And I’m still very curious. Now, I’m discovering technology through my grandchildren. It’s fabulous. My life has been an adventure. It still is.”

A Lasting Legacy

With Michel’s passing, we bid farewell to a distinguished figure in European royalty. His unique choices and impactful writings have left an enduring legacy, ensuring that his contributions to Greek and European royal history will be remembered for years to come.
