The Fraudulent Loan: Confronting My Family with the Truth

I called my attorney, Maya Chen.

By midnight, photographs documenting what had happened were saved with the recording and my medical report.

Maya listened to the audio once.

Then she looked across her desk at me.

“Your father did this because you refused to sell your apartment?”

“Yes.”

Maya studied my face. “And I’m guessing that’s not the only reason you called me.”

I placed another folder in front of her.

Two weeks earlier, while preparing documents for my mortgage, I had requested my full credit history.

That was when I discovered something I had never applied for: a $46,000 business credit line opened in my name.

The mailing address belonged to my parents, and the phone number was Dad’s.

The signature listed as mine wasn’t mine—and Emily was listed as an electronic witness.

The money had been transferred into an LLC controlled by my father for household costs, Emily’s tuition, and her car.

“Don’t confront them,” Maya advised. “Let the paperwork speak for you.”

The following morning, I reported the suspected identity theft and froze my credit.

At 2:17 that afternoon, the apartment officially became mine.

Seven minutes later, Dad called and left a threat on voicemail: “You have until Monday. Put that apartment on the market, or stop pretending you’re part of this family.”

Then Emily sent a voice recording that changed everything: “Just sell it, Sarah. Dad already used your credit before and you never even noticed. Why are you suddenly acting like your money is untouchable?”

I forwarded it immediately to Maya. Emily had just confessed on tape.

Over the weekend, my parents told relatives I used “family money” for the apartment, but my mortgage underwriting proved every dollar came from my own savings.

On Sunday evening, Dad left another voicemail: “We’re coming over tomorrow. You’re going to sign whatever I put in front of you.”

At noon the next day, Dad arrived with Mom and Emily, carrying a thick folder.

What he didn’t know was that two detectives were already waiting nearby.

Dad dropped the folder onto my kitchen counter: “Sign the listing agreement.”

“No,” I replied.

“Did you open a business line of credit using my identity?” I asked.

Emily jumped in: “Why does it matter? Your credit was good. We needed money.”

Dad slammed his palm on the counter: “You think buying one apartment means you can suddenly disobey me?”

“I think you only had control over me because I kept giving it to you,” I said calmly.

I turned toward the hallway: “You can come in now.”

Two detectives stepped into the room. Dad’s face went white.

Mom whispered, “Sarah… what have you done?”

“I protected myself.”

Maya entered and laid out the electronic records and verified signature samples proving forgery.

The paper trail turned out to be far more damaging than Dad expected.

Dad eventually faced charges connected to fraudulent activity and assault. He accepted a plea agreement involving restitution and supervision.

Mom’s case resulted in repayment obligations, probation, and community service.

Emily faced severe consequences for knowingly benefiting from fraudulent funds…

And when the reality of their crimes caught up to them, their entire world began to crumble…
