My husband slammed my eight-month-pregnant belly into a checkout counter over a $14 baby blanket.
As I collapsed clutching my stomach, he snarled, “You greedy bitch! We’re not wasting my money on useless baby junk!”
His smile vanished when the store manager stepped forward, grabbed him, and moments later, secrets far worse than anyone imagined began to surface.
The cold metal edge of the checkout counter struck just beneath my ribs, hard enough to force the breath from my lungs. I collapsed onto the cold tile floor, clutching my eight-month-pregnant stomach while pain radiated across my body.
The blue baby blanket I had chosen sat on the counter beside the scanner, its price tag still facing up: $14.
David stood over me in a spotless polo shirt, looking at me with cold indifference. “Get up,” he hissed, keeping his voice low. “Stop making a scene.”
To the outside world, David was a successful regional director—a man who tipped well, brought expensive scotch to church gatherings, and always smiled for neighbors. But at home, every single dollar was a weapon. He tracked my gas by the mile, rationed groceries, and accused me of being wasteful if I bought anything for myself or our unborn child.
When I tried to buy the $14 blanket, he grabbed my arm and shoved me directly into the metal counter.
As I lay on the floor crying and praying for my baby to move, David stepped between me and the terrified cashier. “She’s fine,” he announced smoothly to the shocked crowd. “She slipped. She’s emotional. Pregnancy hormones.”
He tried to grab me to force me up, but before his hand could touch me, a massive shadow crossed the floor.
Wyatt, the store manager—a tall man with a red beard—stepped directly between us. “Let go of her,” Wyatt commanded.
David puffed out his chest, using his usual authoritative tone: “This is a private family matter. You need to step back before I have your job.”
Wyatt didn’t budge. He looked at the cashier and ordered: “Call 911. We have an injured pregnant woman and an assault witnessed by multiple customers.”
Furious, David stepped forward to strike, but Wyatt grabbed him high by the collar, lifting him off his feet and pinning him away from me.
David twisted in his grip, shouting, “You don’t know who you’re dealing with!”
Wyatt looked down at him with a look of terrifying recognition and said, “I know exactly who I’m dealing with, David.”
David went pale. He stared at Wyatt’s face, suddenly realizing that the store manager knew a dark secret from his past that was about to ruin him forever…
