My boyfriend vanished the night I told him I was expecting. But when my grandfather finally laid eyes on our baby, his reaction made me question whether that vanishing act had really been random.
The hospital faded away in my rearview mirror as my newborn daughter, Nora, dozed beside me after thirteen days in the NICU. She had inherited her father Caleb’s dark curls, his cleft chin, and his distinct eyes—one vivid blue, the other almost black.
Caleb had vanished on the very night I told him about the pregnancy. When I showed him the test, he held my hand and said we’d work it out. He kissed my forehead, said he’d call in the morning, and never did. By the next day, half his closet was cleared out. By my fifth month, I stopped waiting, convinced he had simply abandoned us.
My parents had passed away when I was ten, and my grandfather, Walter, had raised me ever since. He had driven me to every prenatal visit and wept with joy when he learned I was having a girl.
When I pulled onto his driveway, 73-year-old Grandpa rushed down the porch steps to meet us.
“Say hello to your great-grandpa,” I said, settling Nora into the crook of his arm.
I expected joyful tears. I hadn’t expected him to look terrified.
He tilted Nora toward the light, examining her mismatched eyes and the cleft in her chin. The blood drained completely from his face, and his hands began to tremble.
“Emily. Who is her father?” he gasped.
“You know his name,” I said, confused. “Caleb.”
Whatever Grandpa had been dreading, that name confirmed it. He collapsed into a chair, clutching his chest.
“I swore to your mother I’d never tell you,” he whispered, his voice thin and broken. “Sarah made me promise, years before the crash, that you’d grow up with that family nowhere in your life. After what William did to her, I wanted nothing from them near you.”
My heart stopped as panic squeezed my chest. “Grandpa, please… Are you saying Caleb and I are related?”
