Ally Carter thought she was simply doing her sister a favor.
It was supposed to be a routine morning of babysitting—a chance for her sister, Kate, to run a few errands while someone she trusted looked after her six-month-old daughter, Paige.
But within minutes of Kate dropping Paige off, Ally realized something was horribly wrong.
The baby wasn’t acting tired, nor was she hungry. She was in severe distress, letting out a high-pitched cry that immediately set off Ally’s instincts.
Ally tried everything: a bottle, gentle pacing across the room, and a quiet nursery, but nothing calmed the child.
Placing Paige on the changing table to check on her, Ally noticed a strange, artificial cosmetic smell—something chemical applied to the baby’s skin in an apparent attempt to cover up a problem rather than treat it.
Realizing the severity of the situation, Ally didn’t hesitate. She grabbed her keys and rushed Paige straight to the hospital emergency room.
At the hospital, doctors examined the baby and immediately requested a full timeline of events. Ally pulled out her phone to call Kate, expecting her sister to panic and rush to her baby’s bedside.
Instead, there was complete silence. Messages were read, but calls went unanswered.
Minutes later, a hospital investigator walked into the waiting room and asked Ally to step into a private office for questioning—revealing that someone had already given the police a completely different story…
