The next morning, Letty and I picked up the professional wig from Teresa’s salon before school.
Two long hours later, the telephone rang and Principal Brennan’s tight voice told me to come in immediately.
By the time I arrived at the school, my palms were completely slick against the steering wheel from panic.
Mr. Brennan was already standing outside the main office waiting for me with a deeply altered expression.
“They came in together, Piper, all wearing industrial plant jackets and asking for Letty by name,” he said.
I opened the office door with a shaking hand, and what I saw inside nearly broke me completely in two.
Letty was standing beside the large window with both of her hands pressed tightly over her mouth.
Millie sat near her, wearing the beautiful new wig, while her mother stood behind her sobbing into a tissue.
And right there, in the absolute center of the principal’s desk, was Jonathan’s old yellow hard hat.
His name was still clearly written inside the rim, right next to the sparkly purple star Letty gave him.
Six large men stood around the desk in work jackets and heavy boots, trying not to look intimidating.
Luis stepped forward before the others, nodding gently toward me.
Then Marcus, Jonathan’s former plant supervisor, reached into his jacket and offered me a thick envelope.
“Your husband kept this hidden in his locker for years,” Marcus said in a deep, emotional voice.
“He told us if the right day ever came in the future, we would know exactly what to do.”
My knees almost gave out completely as I stared at the familiar handwriting on the paper.
The envelope had my name written on it, but when Marcus started reading the secret instructions Jonathan left behind, the entire room fell into a stunned silence…
