My daughter Chloe had waited four exhausting years for this pregnancy, enduring two painful losses, three failed fertility treatments, and more moments of fragile hope than I could count. By the time she finally became pregnant again, none of us dared celebrate too loudly because Chloe had learned the hard way how dangerous happiness could feel after repeated loss.
Her husband Spencer appeared to support her through all of it, attending every appointment, making sure she ate, and helping her stay calm. I was deeply grateful that she seemed to have someone beside her who understood how fragile this pregnancy felt.
By the second trimester, the pregnancy was progressing normally. Chloe decided to hold a small, intimate gender reveal party in my backyard with close family and friends.

Everyone assumed Chloe was overwhelmed with relief after four years of heartbreak. But looking closely at my daughter’s face, I realized she didn’t look relieved—she looked terrified.
Then I noticed Nora, the baker, standing near the backyard gate. Her arms were folded tightly, her eyes fixed directly on Spencer. When Nora made a subtle motion for me to come over, the urgency on her face made my stomach tighten.
I walked over to the gate. “Is everything alright?”
Nora looked nervously toward the crowd and whispered, “Your son-in-law came into the bakery early this morning with another woman… and paid us five hundred dollars to change the result.”…
