Fifteen years after my little girl vanished from kindergarten, her pink backpack showed up on my front porch inside a plain cardboard box.
Tucked inside was a letter that began, “Mom, you won’t believe who took me that day.”
I had barely finished the first sentence before I caught the look on my husband’s face.
Rain was falling when I noticed the box sitting outside my front door.
Inside was a small pink backpack decorated with faded silver stars that belonged to Caroline.
I unzipped the backpack and discovered an envelope and a folded sheet of paper.
The opening line stole my breath, and my husband Daniel’s face drained completely of color.
Around noon fifteen years ago, her teacher Mrs. Hale had called me screaming.
She claimed Caroline vanished after recess while she briefly looked away.
Police searched everywhere, but Caroline and her pink backpack were gone without a trace.
For fifteen years, Daniel and I simply survived, keeping Caroline’s bedroom untouched with her plastic tiara on the dresser.
Every birthday, I bought her a card and tucked it away in a box.
Now, after I had finally given up, the letter gave me an address in Harbor Ridge and told me to come alone at six o’clock.
Behind the page was a photocopied bank statement with my husband Daniel’s name on it.
I read that line three separate times before Daniel nervously asked who sent it.
I jerked the page away, noticing that my husband looked absolutely terrified.
I didn’t say another word—I grabbed my coat and drove straight to the mysterious address, unaware of the heartbreaking betrayal waiting for me…
