Lily nodded and then revealed something that changed everything.
“This isn’t only about the beach,” she admitted.
Michael’s sister, Rachel, was preparing a slideshow for an upcoming work celebration honoring him, and Ashley had been selecting the family pictures.
According to Lily, Ashley repeatedly skipped or edited every image containing me, claiming the slideshow should focus on Dad’s real household.
That was when I understood: Ashley was attempting to erase me from the visible history of my own family.
I asked Lily to keep her instant photographs safe and returned to the rental house to call Rachel.
When I asked Rachel about the slideshow, she admitted she had noticed hardly any pictures of me, but Ashley had claimed I preferred privacy.
I told Rachel everything, and she was furious, declaring we were not using Ashley’s version.
That evening, we opened the family archive and selected photographs that showed the full truth: Michael as a child, in his first apartment, and holding newborn Lily while I stood nearby.
We also included photographs of Ashley laughing in my kitchen and celebrating holidays with us.
“She belongs in the family story,” I told Rachel. “She simply does not have the right to remove me from it.”
Within minutes, Ashley and Michael both tried calling me.
When I spoke to Michael, I told him I showed his sister the family history his wife was trying to rewrite, and Lily spoke up to confirm what happened at the beach.
Later that night, Michael came to my room alone and admitted he should have stopped Ashley at the beach.
“Decide what you are willing to do when you are standing in front of everyone,” I told him.
The following afternoon, Ashley discovered the slideshow had been changed and argued against “family politics,” leading Michael to briefly suggest keeping it neutral.
But when Lily asked if “neutral” meant watching someone erase his mother, Michael called Rachel back and told her to leave the slideshow exactly as it was.
