My Dying Wife Asked Me to Find My First Love as Her Final Wish (Part 1)

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic mixed with the faint lavender lotion Carol had carried in her purse for as long as I could remember. I sat beside her bed holding her hand while the machines around us kept their slow rhythm, unable to believe that thirty-six years of marriage had been reduced to this small room.

Two days earlier, the doctor had taken me into the hallway and spoken carefully about how far the illness had spread. Most of his explanation disappeared from my mind, leaving only the words that mattered: there was nothing more they could do except keep her comfortable.

Carol had come into my life when I was already carrying the wreckage of another heartbreak. She never demanded explanations or tried to force me to heal faster, but simply stayed beside me until, slowly and completely, I fell in love with her.

From the beginning, she had told me she could not have children. I accepted that without resentment, and when she later suggested adoption, we decided to marry and build a family around a little girl who needed one.

Carol opened her eyes and looked toward me.

“Do you remember Sunday breakfasts when Rebecca was little?”

I smiled despite the ache in my chest. “You made cinnamon pancakes, and she sat on the counter cracking eggs into the bowl with half the shell still attached.”

Carol’s mouth lifted slightly. “She looked so much like me back then.”

“She still does.”

People in Millfield had always said our daughter had Carol’s face, although Rebecca’s bright green eyes never seemed to come from either of us. Carol looked away when I mentioned them, and at the time I assumed she was simply exhausted.

A few minutes later, her fingers tightened around mine.

“Walt, I’ve been a good wife to you, haven’t I?”

The question surprised me because after thirty-six years, I thought she already knew the answer. I told her she had been the best thing that ever happened to me, and tears immediately filled her eyes.

“I need you to promise me something. Say yes before I tell you what it is.”

There was no reason for me to hesitate. “Anything.”

Carol took a slow breath, and when she spoke again, her voice was weak but clear.

“Find Anna, please. You’ll understand everything once you find her. And please… forgive me in advance.”

The name hit me harder than anything the doctor had said.

Anna had been my first love, the woman I had asked to marry me in 1985. She had rejected me in a letter, saying she could not follow me when I moved away and asking me never to come looking for her.

For forty years, I had believed every word.

I asked Carol what Anna had to do with us and what exactly I was supposed to forgive. She only shook her head, refusing to explain before the nurse came in and told me she needed to rest.

Three days later, Carol died.

For two weeks after the funeral, I tried convincing myself that medication and exhaustion had confused her during those final hours. But every night, I heard the same two words in my head: Find Anna.

Eventually, I began searching through old college contacts until a former classmate connected me with Diane, one of Anna’s closest friends. Diane refused to speak to me at first, but a week later she called back with enough information to lead me to Pittsburgh.

Three phone calls later, a woman answered.

“Hello?”

Even after four decades, I recognized her voice immediately.

“Anna? This is Walter.”

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds. Then she whispered my name.

“Walter. My God.”
