The office clock showed 10:16 a.m. when I signed the last page of our settlement papers. For twelve long years, I had gone by Penelope Reynolds, but at 10:17 a.m., I officially became Penelope Vance once more. A deep, steady calm settled over me.
Across the conference table, my former husband, Victor Reynolds, barely glanced my way. He signed his name, slid the documents toward the mediator, and immediately called his pregnant mistress, Naomi Prescott.
“It is finished,” Victor said into the phone, glowing with delight. “Tell our little boy that his father is on his way.” Hanging up, he turned to me without a trace of regret. “Naomi is having a baby boy, Penelope. My parents are thrilled that something wonderful came out of this whole situation.”
Victor’s family treated the Reynolds name like a prestigious legacy worth preserving. His father, Walter, owned a structural engineering firm in Cleveland, where Victor worked as senior vice president while his sister, Samantha, managed commercial properties. They were obsessed with family line and male heirs. Over the years, they had been polite to my daughters, Abigail and Charlotte, but a quiet shadow of disappointment always lingered. When nine-year-old Abigail was born, Victor’s mother sighed: “Maybe the next baby will carry on the family name.” When five-year-old Charlotte arrived, Samantha joked that Victor was destined to be surrounded by women forever.
When Naomi announced her pregnancy was a boy, the Reynolds family treated her like royalty. Meanwhile, Victor started coming home later, leaving our daughters to notice the shifting atmosphere.
At the mediator’s office that morning, our marriage was already dead. Samantha tagged along to support her brother, standing smugly near the door.
“The downtown penthouse stays with me, and so does the luxury SUV because we already settled that part of the division,” Victor said smoothly.
“Yes, Victor, we agreed on that,” I replied, keeping my composure.
“Since you insisted on primary physical custody, you can take full care of the girls, and I will see them whenever my busy work schedule allows it,” he added carelessly. “I am starting over now, Penelope. Naomi and I have a baby on the way.”
Samantha shot me a sharp smile. “Maybe this is really for the best, because Victor finally has a real chance to build the family dynamic he always wanted.”
“He already had a loving family right here,” I replied.
I stood up, pulled out the keys to the penthouse and the luxury SUV, and set them gently on the desk beside the paperwork. “Keep them both.”
Victor’s face softened into a look of total triumph. Before turning to leave, I met his eyes and said softly, “Just remember one important thing, Victor. Possession and actual ownership are not always the same thing.”
His smirk vanished instantly. “What on earth is that supposed to mean?”
I offered no explanation, turning on my heel and walking straight out into the bright morning sunlight.
