My father threw a $6,842 dinner bill at me in front of seventeen relatives.
“Pay it. That’s the only reason we invited you.”
My sister smirked. “Be grateful we even gave you a seat.”
I silently reached for my wallet—until the waiter whispered, “Ma’am, the man you asked me to call has arrived.”
Dad turned toward the door, went completely pale… and suddenly stood up.
My father threw the dinner bill across the table hard enough to knock over my water glass.
“Seventeen people,” he said. “Pay it. That’s the only reason we invited you.”
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then my older sister Vanessa laughed.
We sat in the private dining room of Bellamy House, one of downtown Chicago’s most expensive restaurants. Crystal lights glowed above seventeen relatives dressed for Vanessa’s thirty-eighth birthday as if she were accepting an Oscar instead of blowing out candles.
Vanessa raised her champagne glass and looked across the table at me with a cold, triumphant grin…
