A man’s voice answered Colleen from inside the room. I froze. It was a voice I had heard every morning—a voice I had heard arguing about cake flavors.
I stepped closer to the cracked door. My hand flew to my mouth.
It was Adrian. Alive. Wearing the exact suit he had bought for our wedding.
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it. Three months earlier, I had stood at his funeral believing I would never hear his voice again. His mother held my hand while I cried over a closed casket, and both of them had let me mourn him.
I stumbled back, ran to the restroom, and locked the door, sobbing until it hurt to breathe. When my assistant Kendra called, I wiped my face, took a deep breath, and decided I wasn’t leaving without facing this.
Outside the ceremony space, I saw Adrian’s older brother, Julian. When he turned and saw me, the color drained from his face.
“You knew,” I whispered.
“Meredith, please… keep your voice down,” Julian panicked.
He confessed everything: Adrian survived the car accident while someone else died. Instead of coming back, Adrian panicked and used the tragedy to fake his death and disappear—not just from our engagement, but from his whole life.
Colleen appeared next to us, crying: “I thought I was protecting him from ruining his life!”
“So you ruined mine instead?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Just then, the bride, Sarah, appeared near the entrance. She looked nervous and happy, completely unaware of the truth. I walked straight up to her and told her everything—quietly, without making a scene.
When Sarah confronted Colleen and Colleen stayed silent, Adrian stepped into the hallway.
“Sarah, I can explain,” Adrian stammered.
Sarah slapped him hard across the face. “You told me Meredith knew you wanted out! You said the funeral was just a legal mess!”
Adrian had lied to her too. He lied to both of us because he was too much of a coward to end an engagement.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” Adrian pleaded, looking at me.
“You let me bury you,” I replied, taking off my florist badge. “You were right about one thing… something went wrong today.”
Sarah walked out with her father, the wedding was canceled, and Colleen collapsed against the wall in tears, leaving Adrian standing alone in his suit.
I walked out of that venue without looking back. For months, I thought I had lost the love of my life. That day, I realized I hadn’t lost anything—I had simply been saved from marrying a monster.
