The office clock showed 10:16 a.m. when I put my signature on the last page of our settlement papers. For twelve long years, I had gone by the name Penelope Reynolds, but at 10:17 a.m., I officially became Penelope Vance once more. A deep, steady calm settled over me. Across the table, my ex-husband, Victor Reynolds, immediately picked up his phone: “It is finished. Tell our little boy that his father is already on his way.”
The call was to Naomi Prescott, his colleague. Turning to me without regret, Victor said, “Naomi is having a baby boy, and my parents are thrilled that something wonderful came out of this.” He had no idea that within the hour, his entire world would crumble.
Victor came from a family obsessed with their prestigious name and producing male heirs. His father, Walter, owned a structural engineering firm, and his sister, Samantha, managed their properties. When our nine-year-old daughter Abigail was born, Victor’s mother, Miriam, sighed that maybe the next baby would carry on the family name. When five-year-old Charlotte arrived, Samantha joked about Victor being surrounded by women forever.
When Naomi announced her pregnancy with a boy, the Reynolds family treated her like royalty—Miriam sent flowers, Samantha accompanied her to scans, and Walter opened a investment account for the unborn child. Meanwhile, Victor checked out of our family completely.
At the mediator’s office, Victor acted smug: “The downtown penthouse stays with me, and so does the luxury SUV. Since you insisted on primary physical custody, you can take full care of the girls. I am starting over now.” Samantha added: “Victor finally has a real chance to build the family dynamic he always wanted.”
I set the keys to the penthouse and SUV on the desk: “Keep them both.” Victor smirked in triumph, but I met his eyes and added softly, “Just remember one important thing, Victor. Possession and actual ownership are not always the same thing.”
His smirk vanished instantly as I turned on my heel and walked out into the sunlight, leaving him deeply unsettled…
