My husband raised his glass in front of his entire family and announced in German that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant with his child, convinced that I didn’t understand a single word.
I was standing ten feet away, serving the cake I had brought for Sunday dinner.
No one tried to hide it. His sister giggled. His father looked down at his plate. And his mother, Ingrid, waited until I returned to the table before saying, also in German:
“Don’t worry, Lukas. In the end, we’ll get Evelyn to raise that child.”
They all laughed.
I smiled. “Does anyone want coffee?”
My husband looked at me with that condescending expression I had mistaken for tenderness for years. “See?” he said in German. “She doesn’t suspect a thing.”
What Lukas didn’t know was that I had spent nearly two years learning his language.
His parents had emigrated from Germany decades ago and kept the habit of speaking German at home. Every time they wanted to criticize my clothes, my job, or my cooking, they switched languages. So, I took evening classes and practiced late at night while Lukas slept beside me.
That night, I discovered something far worse.
The pregnant woman was named Sophia Weber—the very woman Lukas had dated before he met me. She was five months pregnant.
Three weeks earlier, Lukas and I had celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary. We had spent six long, painful years undergoing fertility treatments, hormone injections, and failed IVF cycles. He had held me through every negative result, whispering, “You and me, we’re enough.”
Now, he and his mother were discussing using my grief over my infertility to trap me into raising his mistress’s baby.
The next morning, I took a personal day from my job as a financial administrator in Chicago. I sat in a coffee shop reviewing Lukas’s travel receipts when an unknown number called.
“Evelyn Vance? This is Sophia Weber.”
My stomach churned. “Why are you calling me?”
“Because I heard what his family is planning to do to you,” Sophia whispered. “And there’s something else. Check your bank accounts before you confront him.”
