At 2:47 in the morning, my phone buzzed on the nightstand with a message from my husband of six years, Ethan. He was supposedly away attending an important work conference in Las Vegas.
Instead, I opened a photograph of him standing at a Vegas altar, marrying his coworker, Rebecca. His text callously revealed their secret eight-month affair, mocked my quiet lifestyle, and declared that our marriage was over.
Rather than panicking or breaking down, I let my professional instincts as a senior project manager take over. I didn’t shed a single tear. Instead, I grabbed my laptop and got to work.
By dawn, I had transferred every cent of our joint funds into my private, unlinked account to prevent him from draining it further. I canceled his authorized credit cards, updated every digital password and shared account we had, and paid a locksmith double to replace every single deadbolt on my house before sunrise.
