By the time Claire reached the office, the rain had stopped, but her hands were still cold. She had spent the entire night at her sister’s house with her three-day-old daughter sleeping in a borrowed bassinet beside the bed. Every time the baby stirred, Claire woke. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the red keypad light on her own front door.
Her husband, Daniel, had changed the code and left for a beach vacation in Cabo with his family, claiming he was “exhausted and needed a break.”
But the next morning, Claire was no longer thinking about Daniel’s vacation. She was thinking about the title company.
Vivian, an attorney and family friend, opened a secure folder on Claire’s laptop and turned the screen toward her. “There are two things you need to see.”
Claire shifted the baby carrier closer to the desk and looked at the first document. It was a preliminary title report for the Hillcrest property—Claire’s house, which she had bought entirely on her own before ever marrying Daniel.
A document had been submitted for review three days earlier, on the exact day Claire gave birth in the hospital.
Claire opened the attached file and stopped breathing. It was a deed transfer. Her name was on it, Daniel’s name was on it, and beneath them was a signature supposed to belong to Claire. It was a fake.
“Who submitted this?” Claire asked.
Vivian showed her internal notes from an intermediary who had been contacted by Daniel’s mother, referring to Daniel as the “true family owner.” Further digital records revealed the transfer instructions had come directly from Daniel’s personal email address while Claire was in labor.
Daniel hadn’t just changed the door lock code to be spiteful; he was trying to illegally claim ownership of her house before she even came home from the hospital.
Instead of confronting him immediately, Claire decided to stay quiet and act strategically. She called Marcus, a buyer who had previously made an offer on the house.
“Tell him the property is available,” Claire told Vivian. “I’m selling because I now know why he locked me out.”
While Daniel was relaxing in Cabo believing Claire was helpless, locked out, and overwhelmed with a newborn, Claire worked quietly with her legal team and forensic document examiners to freeze the forged transfer and finalize the sale of the house.
On the fourth day, Daniel finally called her from his vacation.
“Claire? Where are you staying?” he asked, sounding irritated. “You need to stop making this bigger than it is. I changed the code because things between us have been toxic. And Mom says you should calm down before you do something stupid with the house.”
Claire leaned back in her chair. “Why would your mother be worried about what I do with my house?”
