I believed carrying out my husband’s dying request would be the toughest thing I’d ever face. Then I discovered he’d prepared for something I never anticipated, and the secret he left behind made me question grief, loyalty, and how fiercely I was willing to guard his memory.
“Sally, wait!” Dr. Rivers came rushing toward me down the hospital hallway, holding a plain envelope. “Mark gave me this three weeks ago. There’s something he made me promise not to give you until now.”
I stared at his untidy handwriting on the front. Two months before, when I was six months pregnant, Mark had fallen ill. The doctors gave him at most three months to live. One evening on the porch, while feeling our baby kick, Mark brought up organ donation: “If I can’t watch her grow up, maybe somebody else gets more time with their family.”
His mother, Violet, was deeply against it. Mark told me she couldn’t handle the idea of his organs going to strangers, and he asked me not to get caught in the middle of her grief. During his final weeks, Mark began requesting private meetings with Dr. Rivers, telling me only, “It’s something I need to handle for you. Please trust me.”
Mark passed away on a rainy Tuesday. I honored his wishes, telling the medical team to proceed with donation. But as I walked to my car after signing the final papers, Dr. Rivers handed me the envelope…
