“Don’t worry about my business trip to Chicago, sweetie. It’s just three days of back-to-back client meetings,” Julian said smoothly as he folded an Italian linen shirt into his bag.

Elena stood watching him with strange clarity, married for twelve years with a ten-year-old daughter named Maya.

While checking the shared family email on the kitchen tablet, she noticed a flight confirmation he forgot to close: Destination Miami, 2 Passengers, Seats 7A and 7B.

Elena didn’t scream or throw his suitcase; instead, she opened another tab, bought seat 7C with her personal card, made dinner, and waited.

Having noticed late-night messages and unfamiliar perfume for weeks, she hired a private investigator who provided surveillance photos of Julian with a 29-year-old junior marketing specialist named Chloe.

The report noted Julian repeatedly claimed his marriage was over and that they would start a new life together shortly.

After crying silently in her design studio, Elena arranged for her daughter to stay with her sister and took an Uber to Logan International Airport.

Boarding the plane, she reached Row 7 where Julian looked up from his tablet, every trace of color disappearing from his face.

“Elena?! What… what are you doing here?” he stammered, as Elena held up her boarding pass: “I believe my seat is right next to yours.”

A stylish young woman appeared in the aisle: “Excuse me, I think that’s my seat,” and Chloe settled into seat 7B between them.

Elena introduced herself as Julian’s wife, causing Chloe to go pale as she realized Julian had lied about being separated and living in South Boston for a year.
