I was holding my daughter’s tiny hand in the ICU when my phone rang.
My husband laughed coldly over the line and said, “I stopped her medication. My mistress needed it more. She’s worth more to me than that little girl.”
My entire world shattered in one sentence.
Two days earlier, my eight-year-old daughter, Lily, had collapsed at school due to a severe autoimmune flare-up. Her immune system had begun attacking her organs, and she was rushed to St. Matthew’s Hospital. The doctors explained that she needed a specific, expensive injectable drug to stop the attack. Missing even a single dose could put her life in immediate danger.
My husband, Daniel, was a senior pharmacist for the hospital network. He knew the medication, the delivery process, and the consequences better than anyone. I had always trusted his medical background, believing it kept our family safe.
By the second night, Lily was fighting for her life in the ICU, but her critical medication had mysteriously never arrived. The doctors were frantically searching for the missing delivery.
When Daniel finally called, I thought he was reaching out with good news. Instead, he sounded irritated.
“I canceled it,” he said flatly, as if canceling a reservation. “I redirected the remaining doses. Vanessa needed them.”
Vanessa was his assistant. I had suspected an affair for months, but Daniel had always gaslit me, calling me insecure and paranoid. Now, he was casually admitting that he had stolen our daughter’s critical treatment to give to his mistress, who claimed to have a similar condition.
“You gave our daughter’s medication to your mistress?” I whispered in utter shock.
Daniel laughed coldly. “Vanessa is an adult with a career and a future. Lily is in the ICU—the doctors will handle it.”
When I begged him, screaming that Lily needed that specific drug to survive, his tone grew even harsher: “Vanessa needed it more. She’s worth more to me than that little girl.”
At that exact moment, the heart monitor beside Lily’s bed began shrieking. Dr. Bennett rushed into the room as Lily’s blood pressure began plummeting rapidly.
In utter panic, I put Daniel on speakerphone right in front of Dr. Bennett and the ICU nurses, revealing the horrific truth of what my husband had just done…
