The legal folder appeared on the laptop screen like a sudden life sentence for everyone in the room.
Karla stopped smiling, her eyes locking onto the document as her lawyer leaned forward aggressively.
Her attorney stated that if the sixteen-year-old Ethan had something to say, he must do so through a responsible adult.
Ethan looked directly at him and calmly stated that he was sixteen and not invisible.
He tapped a key on his tablet, opening an old video clip recorded with a cell phone camera years ago in Chicago.
The footage showed a younger Karla screaming that she couldn’t handle the child and didn’t want to live her life taking care of him.
Karla immediately stood up in the conference room, loudly claiming that the video was taken entirely out of context.
Ethan then played a series of clear audio recordings where Karla explicitly told her mother not to call her if the boy got sick.
The records revealed that Karla had been using the child’s name to collect thousands of dollars in fake online fundraisers.
While her mother sold tamales in the early dawn to pay for occupational therapy, Karla was posting photos at expensive restaurants.
Karla exploded in anger, screaming that Ethan couldn’t manage the money because he couldn’t even talk like a normal person.
She pointed her finger mockingly at him, claiming he was completely unstable, vulnerable, and legally incapable of making decisions. However, Ethan slowly took his hands off his ears, raised his tablet with a pale but determined face, and activated an encrypted file that completely overrode the room’s digital network, displaying a secret video file he had recorded just three days prior with a federal social worker…
