Hearing her use his first name instead of Dad made our family suddenly feel unfamiliar. “No, honey,” I said. “He’s not coming.”
Tears appeared in her eyes as she whispered, “I heard them. Andrew and Grandma Barbara. Monday night in the dining room, Grandma said you would never sign the house papers, and Andrew said he already had your signature. Grandma said they needed the money before Friday because someone was going to take her house.”
My stomach tightened. Barbara lived in an elegant four-bedroom property, yet she was facing foreclosure and financial ruin. Katie continued, explaining that Andrew had caught her dropping her water bottle and told her that good girls keep family secrets. The next day near the crosswalk, she saw him right before the incident happened: “Mom, he knew I was going to tell you.”
THE UNCOVERED SURVEILLANCE EVIDENCE
At 4:35 that afternoon, Andrew called repeatedly and sent text messages demanding that I come home and apologize to his mother. I forwarded everything to Detective Reynolds, who soon called back to confirm that the black SUV seen near the scene had been rented using Andrew’s driver’s license.
Executing search warrants at Barbara’s residence, investigators found significant financial debts totaling well over four hundred thousand dollars, along with digital drafts of the forged power of attorney on Andrew’s laptop. Most disturbing was a text exchange where Andrew wrote that Katie had heard too much, and Barbara replied that the situation needed to be handled before she told me.
The following morning, Detective Reynolds showed me gas station surveillance footage from near the intersection. The recording showed Katie walking along the sidewalk when a black SUV pulled up and Andrew stepped out wearing his recognizable jacket and baseball cap.
He approached Katie, they exchanged tense words, and as she backed away toward the roadway, his arm moved forward abruptly just before she lost her balance and stumbled into the street. Immediately after the collision occurred, the footage captured Andrew walking back to his vehicle and driving away without attempting to help his stepdaughter or contact emergency services.
BARBARA’S CONFRONTATION
By Thursday afternoon, Andrew was taken into police custody. Shortly after, Barbara called my phone in an unsteady voice, demanding that I fix the situation and tell the police it was all a misunderstanding.
“Did you know Andrew forged my signature?” I asked firmly. “Did you know he was trying to sell my father’s house? And did you know Katie overheard your conversation?”
Barbara broke down sobbing, claiming she was about to lose everything and complaining about her lost security. When I pointed out that my daughter was in intensive care, Barbara blurted out: “Andrew never meant for her to get hurt! He said the girl surprised him!”
Not her granddaughter. Not even Katie. Simply the girl. I disconnected the call immediately, preserving the recording for the authorities.
