The night before my doctoral defense, my husband let out a cold laugh… (Part 2)

The morning on the university campus was sharp and clear. Selena crossed the main esplanade with her heavy backpack on her shoulder, her dissertation pressed tightly against her chest, and a silk scarf tied around her head. A young master’s student had met her in the restroom, recognized her distress, and offered her the wine-colored scarf to cover the jagged, cut strands of her hair.

At 8:19 a.m., Hunter sent a barrage of manipulative text messages: “Do not do this, come back home… If you go into that room looking like that, they are going to tear you apart, and nobody is going to respect a woman who looks so unstable.”

Selena powered off her cell phone completely.

When she entered the department auditorium, her thesis advisor, Dr. Rebecca Tran, gasped in horror: “Selena, good heavens, what on earth did they do to you?”

“My husband and his mother thought that if they humiliated me enough, I would not show up,” Selena whispered.

When Rebecca offered to postpone, Selena firmly refused: “If I do not go in there and finish this, they win, and they win forever.”

Inside the auditorium sat the demanding panel, along with colleagues and students. Then Selena saw a sight that stole her breath completely: a tall man in a dark gray suit in the front row. It was her father, Carson, whom she hadn’t spoken to in three years after a bitter fallout over her marriage to Hunter.

Carson rose slowly from his seat. Behind him, the entire department stood up in unison—not out of pity, but out of absolute, earned respect.

Selena took a deep breath and began her presentation. Every slide became a physical blow against everything they had tried to reduce her to. Every clear answer she gave felt like another door slamming in Hunter’s face.

THE VERDICT AND TRIUMPH

During the committee’s private deliberation, Carson approached Selena in the hallway. “Hunter called me last night,” he revealed, his voice filled with regret. “He tried to convince me you were unstable. I went to your apartment, learned you had left in tears, and realized the truth. I should have been on your side much sooner, Selena.”

Selena looked at him, her voice steady: “Yes, you really should have been.”

The auditorium doors opened, and Dr. Dominic adjusted his glasses before addressing the room: “Candidate Selena Herrera has successfully defended an outstanding doctoral thesis. The synod’s recommendation is unanimous approval with honorable mention and immediate nomination for the faculty’s prestigious research award.”

Eruptions of applause filled the room as colleagues congratulated “Doctor Herrera.”

Then she spotted him. Hunter was standing near the auditorium’s side entrance, pale and frozen, shocked by her triumph. As he tried to take an uncertain step toward her, Carson immediately stepped in between them like a wall.

“Do not even think about coming anywhere near her,” Carson warned coldly.

Selena walked up to Hunter, looking at him without shaking or pleading.

“It is over, Hunter,” she said clearly.

“Selena, please, my mom was only—”

“Your mom cut my hair, and you stood there and held me up so she could do it,” she cut him off, her voice like ice. “Do not ever say my name again as if it still belongs to you.”

Hunter dropped his gaze, completely stripped of control and dignity.

That same afternoon, flanked by her advisor and her father, Dr. Selena Herrera filed a formal police complaint for assault and signed the final divorce papers. Wrapping her wine-colored scarf tightly, she stepped into the sunlight as a free, victorious woman—proving that no one could ever diminish her voice or power again.
