It was two in the morning, cold rain tapping against the glass, when I looked down at the text glowing on my phone from my son, Steven.
“Mom, please don’t come to your grandson’s birthday tomorrow. My mother-in-law says having you there makes people uncomfortable.”
He was shutting me out of a ten-million-dollar estate—the exact property I had quietly bought years earlier to rescue him from bankruptcy and financial ruin.
The hurt was instantly replaced by something sharper and colder. “You don’t have security, Stephanie—you have catering staff,” I replied calmly. “And behind you hangs a banner reading ‘Callahan-Vance Estate.’ You put your name first on a ten-million-dollar property that I alone paid for.”
Steven came running across the lawn, his face draining of color as he saw the officers. “Mom! Please, don’t do this today! I’ll come to your house tonight, I promise!”
“We had an opportunity to talk at two in the morning,” I replied firmly.
Eric stepped forward and addressed the quiet crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, I represent Sterling Holdings. My client standing here is the sole legal owner of this entire estate.”
Shocked murmurs erupted among the guests as Stephanie gasped in disbelief…
