I drove straight to Claire’s house. She confirmed the money was for rent and groceries and that Ivy was indeed her daughter, whom Robert had briefly held while crying and repeating Claudia’s name. But before I left, Claire looked at me sadly and whispered, “Ask him if he said goodbye to Claudia.”
Her words chilled me all the way home. When I confronted Robert again, he broke down and confessed the truth.
After Claudia passed away, the hospital had allowed him to spend twenty minutes holding our daughter. He saw that she had my mouth and my eyes. But when I woke from surgery, he panicked, terrified that the reality would destroy me, and falsely told me she was already gone before I could ask to see her.
He then pulled out an envelope containing a small card with Claudia’s tiny footprints—a footprint card he had looked at every night while I lay upstairs grieving without knowing what my daughter had looked like.
Seeing those footprints shattered me. Claudia was real, yet Robert had stripped away my only chance to say goodbye.
While understanding his grief and his moment holding Ivy, it didn’t erase the daily lies. We realized we had completely neglected Willie’s grief, leaving him to believe his sister was taken away because of money. That evening, Robert and I sat with Willie and gently explained the whole truth. Claudia was gone, but she was loved.
A week later, we began grief counseling. Standing together in Claudia’s untouched nursery with Willie holding his stuffed rabbit, we finally laid her footprint card on the shelf. The grief remained, but Claudia was no longer hidden behind silence. She was loved, remembered, and we were finally healing together.
