My nine-year-old son Ethan had been getting his hair cut at the same barbershop for nearly two years.
Then one Saturday, a new barber named Marcus took him into his chair. Halfway through the haircut, Marcus stopped the clippers, stared behind Ethan’s left ear, and quietly told me: “Check that when you get home. Somewhere private.”
Ten minutes later, in our kitchen, I moved the hair behind Ethan’s ear and found a flesh-colored patch carefully blended against his skin. Underneath was a tiny black disc—smooth, hard, and no larger than a grain of rice.
“Ethan, who put this here?” I asked, keeping my voice calm.
His whole expression changed. Looking at the floor, he whispered, “Maybe the man from school. The one who knew Dad.”
My blood went cold. Ethan’s father, Ryan, had died three years ago.
Over the past month, Ethan had been asking more questions about his father and repeatedly begging me to visit the storage unit where I kept Ryan’s old belongings. Standing in my kitchen holding a mysterious electronic disc found on my son’s body, his sudden obsession with his dead father no longer felt innocent.
I called the police immediately. The dispatcher told me not to touch the object, lock all doors, and stay away from the windows while officers rushed over.
While we waited, Ethan broke down in tears. “He told me not to tell you. He said it was a secret key.”
Twenty minutes later, two police cars pulled up outside my house…
