I gave birth alone because my ex-husband said I was “no longer his problem.” Ten minutes later, the doctor holding my newborn son looked at his tiny face, went pale, and began to cry.
“This… this can’t be possible,” he whispered.
I was too exhausted to understand. My hair was soaked, my hands were shaking, and my body felt like it had been split open by pain. I had driven myself to the hospital at dawn, one hand on the wheel and the other pressed against my stomach, begging my baby to wait.
Three months earlier, my husband, Julian Vance, had thrown divorce papers onto our dining table while his mother, Eleanor, stood behind him with a cold smirk.
“You’re pregnant,” I said, staring at the papers.
Julian adjusted his silver watch: “That’s unfortunate timing.”
Eleanor added mockingly: “Don’t be dramatic, Vivian. Men like my son don’t stay trapped by women who get pregnant to secure money.”
By the end of that week, Julian froze our joint account, canceled my health insurance, and spread lies that I had cheated. But Julian had forgotten one critical detail: before becoming his wife, I was a senior contract auditor for one of the top law firms in the city.
While working nights cleaning offices and editing legal transcripts to pay for rent and prenatal care, I gathered password records, transfer documents, shell company invoices, and emails between Julian and Eleanor detailing their plan to “starve her into signing away custody.”
Now, in the delivery room, the attending physician, Dr. Marcus Thorne, stared at my baby in absolute shock.
“Who is the father?” he rasped, tears trembling on his lashes.
“Julian Vance,” I answered.
Before Dr. Thorne could speak, the door swung open and Julian walked in smiling, followed by Eleanor in pearls.
“Look at that, she survived,” Julian sneered, turning to me: “You’re broke and alone. Sign temporary custody to me today, and I’ll cover the hospital bill.”
I reached into my bag and pulled out a printed folder of his illegal financial transfers and forged insurance cancellations: “I’m not signing anything, Julian… especially when I know how sloppy you are when you think someone is weak.”
Julian lunged forward to snatch the evidence, but Dr. Thorne unexpectedly stepped in, grabbing Julian’s wrist with a face full of cold, protective fury…
