After four years of saving, I finally bought my dream apartment. When I told my parents, Dad demanded I sell it to fund my sister’s college. I refused, he forced me out but they had no idea what I planned.

The moment I told my father I had bought my own apartment, his fist came down on the dining table hard enough to make the glasses jump.

Then he stared at me as though I had taken the money directly from his wallet.

“You did what?”

I was still holding the small silver key in my hand.

That key represented four years of overtime, skipped trips, discounted lunches, and turning down almost everything I wanted because I had one goal.

A place of my own.

“I bought a two-bedroom apartment downtown,” I said. “Closing is Friday.”

My mother froze.

My younger sister, Emily, finally looked up from her phone.

Dad’s expression darkened.

“You bought property without asking us?”

For a second, I laughed. I honestly thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

“You’re going to sell it,” he said.

I stared at him. “Excuse me?”

“Emily still needs tuition money.”

Emily suddenly became very interested in the conversation.

“I bought the apartment with my own savings.”

Mom shook her head: “And? Family should come before your selfish little plans.”

Whenever I asked when any of my past financial help would be repaid, Mom accused me of being heartless.

But the apartment was different. So this time, I said one word: “No.”

Dad stood so suddenly that his chair tipped backward.

“You think that finance job makes you better than us?”

“No. I think the money I earn belongs to me.”

His anger exploded. He grabbed me and forced me toward the front hall before shoving me outside into the rain.

My shoulder struck the porch railing. Mom and Emily just stood in the doorway watching.

Then Dad threw my purse after me: “Come back when you’re ready to sell the apartment.”

The door slammed.

Sitting on the wet porch, I noticed a tiny green light blinking from the strap of my purse.

My recorder.

Issued by my employer’s security department after an incident six months ago, it was still running.

My father had just recorded his own assault.

But that wasn’t the only thing he had forgotten.

He liked describing my career as “some fancy finance job.”

In reality, I was a forensic accountant.

My work involved tracing assets, investigating fraud, reviewing suspicious transactions, and following money people hoped nobody would notice.

And for the previous three months, I had been quietly dealing with something troubling: a company connected to my father kept appearing in financial records linked to my name…

They thought pushing me out into the rain was the end of it—they had no idea I held the key to their entire downfall…
