My brother left my two children outside in freezing weather… (Part 1)

My older brother spent thousands of dollars throwing an extravagant New Year’s Eve celebration with catered food, champagne, and a chocolate fountain inside his warm home, while my twelve-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter were left waiting outside in 29-degree weather for nearly three hours with thin coats because their grandfather never arrived and my brother knew they were there. To make matters worse, the entire party had been financed with money from a family account I controlled.

My name is Dana Haskins. I’m forty years old, married to an emergency room nurse named Marcus, and an overnight radio host in Wichita, Kansas. On New Year’s Eve, while I was broadcasting live and Marcus worked his hospital shift, our children Calvin and Molly were supposed to spend the evening at my older brother Ross’s house. At 10:52 p.m., an unfamiliar number called twice, but I didn’t answer during the broadcast.

THE FROZEN PORCH

My shift ended at six the following morning, and when I checked my voicemail, an elderly neighbor named Lamar filled the empty studio with shocking news: “Your children are safe now. I brought them into my house and got them warm. But they’d been sitting outside Ross’s place since before eight.”

Hurrying to my father’s house, Calvin explained that when Marcus dropped them off at 7:45 p.m., Ross answered the door and refused to let them inside because Jillian and the older kids were having their own party. Ross told them to wait on the porch for Grandpa, whose truck had broken down; though Grandpa called Ross to explain the delay, Ross lied and assured him the children were already inside enjoying themselves.

Because they didn’t want to disturb us at work or the hospital, my children waited on the freezing porch for hours until Lamar found them shivering and brought them inside with blankets and warm drinks. When Molly mentioned seeing people dipping strawberries into a chocolate fountain through the window, something inside me changed—not out of a desire for revenge, but because my brother had decided his party was more important than my children’s safety and lied to our father to hide it.

THE FINANCIAL BETRAYAL

Opening my banking application that morning, I examined the transaction history of our Family Fund account—a legally registered account in my sole name where I contributed $100 monthly alongside contributions from Mom and Dad, giving Ross an authorized debit card only for legitimate family events. Discovering that Ross had contributed a total of only $600 over the past year while racking up $3,740 in questionable personal expenses including new tires, an anniversary gift registry, and $2,140 for his New Year’s party catering, I immediately blocked his card, revoked his authorization, and secured the remaining funds.

At 7:30 a.m., I texted Mom about the children being left in the freezing cold and the unauthorized charges, prompting Ross to come pounding furiously on my front door demanding his money back while angrily shouting that he had rights and that his children’s party was his own business, completely unaware of the banking evidence waiting to dismantle his entire life.
