On Christmas Day, my mother made my six-year-old adopted daughter clean the family’s dishes… (Part 2)

I slowly turned around in the quiet hallway, keeping my fingers pressed against the cool brass door handle.

My mother Carmen was holding a crystal glass, her hands trembling so noticeably that I worried she might drop it. Beside her, my father Vincenzo stood motionless, his scotch glass suspended halfway to his lips as the familiar expression of superiority evaporated from his face.

Then six-year-old Renata leaned closer to my ear and whispered softly: “Grandma already looked inside your letter, Daddy. I saw her warming a knife in the kitchen while you were away… she used it to open the envelope.”

Without another word, I walked into my study, set Renata gently on the leather sofa, and locked the door behind us.

On my mahogany desk rested the thick manila envelope from senior attorney Arthur Sterling. The red wax seal had been clumsily broken and pressed back together.

As I unfolded the documents, my breath caught in my chest. Eight years earlier, my older brother Lorenzo had tragically died in an aviation accident. His pregnant fiancé, Elena—a modest girl from Naples—was forced away by my parents shortly after his funeral.

The notarized records showed that after Elena gave birth, my parents used illegal payments to alter official documents, separate the infant from her mother, and place her in an adoption agency under a fabricated identity to retain complete control over our late grandfather’s $1 billion family trust.

Elena tragically passed away from medical complications shortly after, and years later, by pure fate, I had unknowingly adopted my own biological niece.

The enclosed DNA test left zero room for doubt: Probability of Paternity (Lorenzo DeLuca): 99.99%. Renata was the sole direct biological heir to the DeLuca dynasty.

THE RECKONING IN THE LIVING ROOM

My mother had opened this envelope earlier that morning. She had read the genetic findings, looked at six-year-old Renata, and made her deliberate choice—forcing the rightful billionaire heiress to clean the dinner dishes while denying her place in the family.

An extraordinary sense of calm and clarity settled over me. I picked up my phone and called my corporate security director, Marcus: “Bring our full security detail and contact Chief Inspector Rossi from the Financial Crimes Division immediately. I am transmitting evidence of identity concealment and financial fraud.”

I walked back out into the living room holding the thick envelope. My sister Paola sat sipping vintage champagne while her daughters opened golden gifts.

I set the documents firmly on the glass table: “Read the papers, Paola. Renata is Lorenzo’s daughter, and our parents systematically hid her from us to maintain control of Grandfather’s billion-dollar trust.”

Paola’s champagne glass dropped onto the marble floor, shattering into pieces.

When Carmen broke down in frantic tears and Vincenzo attempted to threaten me with endless legal proceedings, I simply walked toward the window and drew back the heavy curtain.

Six black security SUVs and three police cars pulled into the snow-covered driveway, their red and blue lights illuminating the dark winter evening.

THE END OF AN EMPIRE

Chief Inspector Rossi and armed officers entered the foyer. Armed with formal judicial authorization, they arrested Vincenzo and Carmen DeLuca for financial fraud, child identity concealment, and conspiracy, placing handcuffs around their wrists right beside the twelve-foot Christmas tree.

I lifted Renata securely into my arms as my parents were escorted out of the mansion.

“Daddy, why did the police come? Is Grandma going away?” she whispered with wide brown eyes that mirrored Lorenzo’s.

“Grandma and Grandpa made some very bad mistakes, sweetheart,” I reassured her, kissing her cheek. “Now we are going home.”

Justice was finally served, the family trust was lawfully transferred to Renata’s protection, and for the first time in her life, my daughter was safe, loved, and truly home.
