I hadn’t even been home fifteen minutes from my business trip. My suitcase was still by the door when I felt the eerie silence. No tiny footsteps, no laughter, no greeting.
Then her voice came softly from the bedroom, weak and on the verge of breaking: “Dad… please don’t be mad. Mom said if I told you, things would get worse. But my back hurts… and I can’t sleep.”
I froze. Kneeling outside her room, I saw eight-year-old Lily standing partially hidden behind the door, trembling in fear.
When I reached out, she flinched and pulled away. “Please… don’t. It hurts.”
“Tell me what happened, sweetheart,” I whispered, keeping my voice as gentle as possible.
Lily glanced nervously toward the hallway. “Mom got mad because I spilled juice. She said I did it on purpose. She pushed me… and my back hit the door handle. I couldn’t breathe.”
My heart shattered. When I asked if she told her mother about the pain, Lily swallowed hard and replied, “Mom said I was overreacting.”
“Can you show me your back?” I asked softly.
She hesitated, then slowly turned around and lifted her pajama shirt. What I saw made my blood run cold…
