The morning my four-year-old daughter died began normally with her sitting at the counter in pink pajamas.
My husband, Mark, grabbed his keys and offered to do the daycare drop-off because I was late.
A few hours later, my phone rang at work and it was Miss Greenwood, Ava’s daycare teacher.
She said Ava got very sick during class and the ambulance took her to the hospital.

I asked him why his coworker was with our daughter the morning she died, and he sat down heavily.
He rubbed his face in shame and whispered that they had been secretly seeing each other for six months.
Mark admitted she brought a strawberry banana smoothie for Ava to be nice.
However, just as Mark put his head in his hands to beg for forgiveness, a second notification popped up on my phone from Miss Greenwood. She had attached an additional audio file recorded by the daycare’s outdoor security microphone. What Mark’s voice clearly muttered to Lauren on that tape exactly ten seconds after handing Ava the drink completely shattered my heart into a million pieces…
