The wedding night at the Vancewood estate was meant to be the closing act of a cold, high-society arrangement. Instead, Julian stood outside the locked master bedroom, his chest tight with a dark dread he couldn’t name.
Moments earlier, a panicked maid had reported a dark red stain spreading through the back of Clara’s pristine wedding gown. His new wife—the woman society cruel mocked as “the ugly heiress”—had locked herself inside, flatly refusing to let her father’s personal physician anywhere near her.
Julian knocked gently on the heavy door. “Clara, I won’t come in unless you allow it. But I can’t walk away knowing you’re hurt. Let me help you… as the only person in this house who doesn’t belong to your father.”
A heavy silence followed before the lock finally clicked.
Julian pushed the door open, and the sight in front of him stole the breath from his lungs.
Clara stood beside the bed, the back of her extravagant dress unfastened. An antique brass key—a secret she had desperately sewn into her corset lining—had pierced through the silk and cut into her skin.
But it wasn’t the blood that left Julian speechless. As the heavy fabric slid down her shoulders, he saw the horrific scars. Thick, dark bands encircled both her wrists, and agonizing lines crisscrossed her back—the unmistakable marks of someone who had been violently restrained and imprisoned for years.
“Who did this to you?” Julian whispered, lowering himself to one knee, his dark eyes burning with protective rage.
Clara picked up the blood-stained key, her voice barely audible but cold as ice. “My father. And the doctors he paid to convince the world I was insane.”
The high-society rumors had said Julian was marrying a monster for her vast fortune. But in that chilling moment, he realized the terrifying truth: he had married the sole survivor of a monstrous family.
Clara clutched the brass key tightly, her eyes flicking toward the hallway. “He knows I took it, Julian. He knows what this key opens. And tonight… he isn’t going to let us leave this estate alive.”
