Moukoko was immediately pulled from the freezing water, and emergency CPR was performed on the teen right by the poolside.
Emergency responders rushed him in critical condition to Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital under full sirens.
But young Moukoko had already suffered catastrophic and severe brain damage from the lack of oxygen during those 38 minutes.
Tragically, all intensive medical attempts to revive him were entirely unsuccessful, according to reports from CTV News.
The 14-year-old teen passed away peacefully six days later in the hospital, leaving his family completely devastated.
The official coroner’s report firmly stated that absolute water safety — not just swimming instruction — must be the main focus of all future school courses.
“It just breaks my heart. It’s incredibly hard for me to think about this teacher who was there when it happened,” Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante told the Montreal Gazette.
“So let’s make sure that our kids know how to behave in water and let’s make sure that school boards have enough resources so they can make sure that everybody’s safe,” the mayor added.
