I Slept With a Stranger on My 62nd Birthday… (Part 1)

On the day I turned sixty-two, I woke up early and eagerly checked my phone screen, expecting to see loving messages from my children, relatives, or at least a few old friends, but the display remained completely empty.

Hour after hour passed in agonizing silence, and when lunchtime came and went with no word from my busy daughter or my distant son, I sat alone in my kitchen staring at a small birthday cake I had bought for myself.

Refusing to spend my entire special day drowning in self-pity and loneliness, I put on my favorite green dress, styled my hair, slipped on a pair of neglected earrings, and headed into the city to feel like an ordinary woman again.

Finding a cozy little bar with soft music near downtown, I chose a quiet corner table and ordered a glass of red wine to lift my spirits, which was when a well-dressed man around forty noticed me and walked over.

Introducing himself as Daniel, a globe-trotting photographer recently returned from a long trip, he asked to join me, and for nearly two hours, he listened intently to my stories and made me feel young and beautiful again.

When I eventually admitted it was my birthday, Daniel looked pleasantly surprised, called the waiter over to order a festive dessert with a candle, and gently reminded me that nobody should ever end their birthday alone.

After leaving the bar, we took a long romantic stroll through the city lights, and when he offered to accompany me to the hotel where I had decided to stay for the night, I let my guard completely down for the first time in years.

I allowed myself to blissfully forget my age, my grown children, my neighbors, and the judgment of the world, sharing a passionate and intimate night with a stranger whose name I barely knew.

The next morning, bright sunlight streamed across the mattress, but when I instinctively rolled over to the other side of the bed, I found it completely cold and empty.

Daniel was nowhere to be found, his clothes had vanished into thin air, and sitting right on the nightstand was a crisp white envelope that would instantly turn my birthday miracle into my deepest nightmare.
