My Stepmom Made Me Pay Rent, Then Asked Me to Leave the House — The Family Secret Uncovered

That exact night, someone knocked very loudly on our front door.

Sharon opened it casually and completely froze on the spot.

My grandfather stood right there on the porch with a stern face and blazing eyes.

He didn’t shout at all, because his presence alone was enough.

“I need an immediate word with you and David,” he said in a deep, serious voice.

I sat quietly on the dark stairs, my heart pounding, as they disappeared into Dad’s office.

A few minutes later, the office door flew open and Sharon stormed out, her face red and furious.

Dad followed right behind her with his head low, not even daring to look at me.

Then Grandpa came out, looked up, and smiled at me very gently.

“Come, Emily, let’s talk,” he said as we both sat down on the couch.

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” he explained, “you can stay here rent-free, move in with me, or move into one of my rental apartments, also completely rent-free.”

Then, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a check for fifteen thousand dollars.

“This is your money,” he said firmly. “Every dollar you paid in rent—I made your father pay it back today.”

My eyes widened in shock as Grandpa’s jaw clenched with deep anger.

“He had absolutely no right to take your money, because this house doesn’t belong to him; it’s mine.”

“I gave it to your parents when they married, and after your mom passed, I let them stay because they were family.”

I felt completely sick realizing they made me pay rent for a house that didn’t even belong to them.

I packed my bags that very night and moved into the cozy apartment Grandpa gave me.

Three days later, my phone rang and Sharon was screaming at the top of her lungs, blaming me for humiliating them.

“If you and Dad feel humiliated, that’s on you,” I told her coolly before hanging up the phone.

A few days later, Grandpa told me Sharon had called him too, trying to manipulate him into taking everything back.

But Grandpa just chuckled and said, “I told her that girl is my daughter’s child, and I will always choose her over you.”

My throat went tight as he squeezed my hand, reminding me what real family actually means.
