I agreed to carry a baby for my twin brother, but when he held his newborn daughter… (Part 2)

Three days afterward, my usually welcoming kitchen felt uncomfortably tense as my twin brother stood across the counter from me.

Lucas still wore the faded jacket I remembered from the hospital, while I remained in loose sweatpants after another sleepless night. Baby Hope rested peacefully inside her bassinet beside the window, and my seven-year-old son Mason was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom.

“You cannot simply arrive at my door and pretend the hospital never happened,” I told him quietly but firmly.

“Nora, please give me a chance to explain myself,” Lucas requested, extending one hand toward the countertop.

“What exactly is there to explain?” I responded, struggling to contain my frustration. “I have been awake since four this morning looking after the little girl you refused to bring home!”

My words visibly affected my brother, who lowered his head with an ash@med expression.

“The medical specialists explained the treatment she might require,” Lucas began hesitantly. “They discussed possible surgeries, ongoing physical therapy, and medical care that could become very expensive. When I heard the estimated costs, I became completely overwhelmed.”

“But Lucas, she is your daughter!” I replied sharply, leaning toward him.

THE REAL SECRET BEHIND THE REJECTION

“I understand how terribly I handled everything, Nora,” Lucas admitted, pulling out a stool and sitting down with a defeated expression.

“The doctor contacted me yesterday and explained that her condition appears relatively mild,” I told him. “Hope will require an operation and continued monitoring, but the specialists are optimistic about her development. Still, you left that hospital as though her diagnosis defined her entire future.”

“There is something else you need to understand,” Lucas admitted, resting both hands against the counter. “I was dismissed from my job four months ago, shortly after your second-trimester appointment.”

For several moments, I could only stare at my brother, listening to the kitchen clock ticking steadily behind us.

“Have you told Hannah about losing your job?” I finally asked.

“No, she does not know anything,” Lucas confessed, examining his hands. “Every morning, I get dressed for work, leave the house, and spend the day at a nearby coffee shop applying for positions until five. Almost nobody has responded.”

“Then how did you afford everything for the nursery?” I asked, beginning to understand what had happened.

“I charged everything to our credit cards,” Lucas acknowledged quietly. “Hannah believes we paid for those purchases with our savings, but there is nothing left in that account.”

Feeling suddenly unsteady, I pulled out a chair and sat across from him.

“So when the specialists started discussing treatment expenses,” I began quietly.

“All I could imagine was another financial responsibility on top of the debts Hannah knows nothing about,” Lucas admitted pa!nfully. “When I noticed the baby’s medical condition, I convinced myself it could become my excuse to leave rather than admit how badly our finances had deteriorated.”

“You were willing to let Hannah believe you had rejected your daughter because admitting your financial problems felt too difficult?” I asked, astonished.

“I thought I was protecting her from discovering how much I had messed everything up,” Lucas replied desperately.

THE CONFRONTATION WITH HANNAH

About an hour later, I carried Hope along the walkway leading to his house, where Hannah sat on the living room couch with swollen, tearful eyes.

“Lucas, you need to explain everything to Hannah now,” I said when we entered.

My brother took a seat facing his wife and began speaking in a trembling voice.

“I lost my job several months ago, Hannah,” Lucas confessed through tears. “Our savings have disappeared, the nursery purchases were made with borrowed money, and I have been dishonest every morning. When I learned about Hope’s condition, I became frightened of the medical expenses and used that fear to justify leaving.”

For a long moment, Hannah remained completely quiet, looking at her husband as she absorbed his confession.

“You have been hiding the truth about our lives from me for months,” Hannah whispered, sounding deeply hurt.

“I am truly sorry for everything,” Lucas cried, covering his face with his hands.

“I would have been willing to sell our belongings if that was what our daughter needed,” Hannah replied emotionally, rising from the sofa. “I would have taken extra jobs, Lucas. Our daughter’s well-being would always matter more to me than money.”

Hannah approached me with trembling hands, and I gently transferred little Hope into her waiting arms.

“The specialist confirmed today that Hope’s condition is considered mild,” I explained reassuringly. “Her doctors expect an initial procedure and ongoing therapy to support her development, and they are hopeful she can enjoy a healthy, fulfilling life.”

Hannah embraced her daughter tenderly, allowing quiet tears to fall onto the soft blanket while Lucas sat nearby, overcome with emotion.

“I can understand that you were frightened and made a terrible decision,” Hannah told her husband firmly, meeting his eyes. “But rebuilding my trust will require complete honesty from you from this moment forward.”

“I promise I will never hide something like this from you again,” Lucas replied, tears filling his eyes.

As I watched them sitting together in their peaceful living room, I finally felt some of the anxiety that had followed me since the delivery begin to fade. I leaned forward, placed a gentle kiss on Hope’s forehead, and stepped outside into the cool evening, hopeful that our family had finally begun finding its way forward.
